West Midlands Mayor breaks ground on Jewellery Quarter regeneration project

The restoration of the former J. Ashford & Son jewellery factory in Birmingham by Shaylor Group, Blackswan Property and Grainger Plc came under the spotlight when West Midlands Mayor Andy Street visited the site to learn about its rich history and exciting future.

The occasion was marked by a ground breaking ceremony at the Great Hampton Street site where the building works are taking place. Andy learned about the complex refurbishment of the listed building, taking place alongside the construction of two new apartment buildings.

Jewellery Quarter factory set for new life as apartments

A historic former jewellery factory in Birmingham is set to be redeveloped into almost 160 new flats.

Birmingham City Council is expected to approve plans next week to regenerate the run-down former home of Ashfords in Great Hampton Street.

The scheme was first unveiled last summer and will involve some demolition work and also the renovation and use of the three-storey, Grade II*-listed building at 16-18 Great Hampton Street which was constructed in 1912 and was once home to J Ashford & Son.

New apartments and hotel planned for Jewellery Quarter

Almost 500 apartments, a boutique hotel and retail courtyard are all planned at a new development in the Jewellery Quarter.

New proposals have been unveiled to transform an industrial site next to the quarter’s railway station into a mixed-use complex which could also bring back into use an old Victoria subway.

To be called ‘Hockley Mills’, the plot is on the corner of Pitsford Street and Icknield Street and is currently used as a storage facility by Mr Tyre.
